Why is my truck leaking?

Why is my truck leaking?

Hi, it's Stacey at Wayside Garage. Today, we're diving into an issue we found on a 2019 Ford Expedition with a 3.5-liter engine. The vehicle was brought in for an oil leak concern, but upon inspection, we discovered the real culprit was a leaking water pump.

Identifying the Leak

When our client noticed what they thought was an oil leak, it turned out to be coolant leaking from the water pump. Alan, our certified technician, found that the water pump bearing had failed, leading to the coolant leak. It's a common misconception to confuse coolant leaks with oil leaks, especially if the coolant hasn't been changed regularly. Over time, coolant can degrade, becoming acidic and changing color, which can easily be mistaken for oil.

The Importance of Regular Coolant Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your vehicle's cooling system is crucial. Coolant should be changed at intervals recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. If not maintained, the coolant can break down and become acidic, affecting the pH level and causing electrolysis. This can lead to corrosion and excessive wear on the water pump bearing, ultimately causing it to fail.

What Happens When a Water Pump Fails?

In the case of the Ford Expedition, the water pump's bearing went out. When this happens, the coolant can leak through a small "weep hole" on the pump, which is designed to indicate a failing water pump. The leaking coolant then drips onto the engine block and onto the ground, signaling a problem.

Signs Your Water Pump Might Be Failing

1. Coolant Leak: A noticeable coolant leak under the vehicle is a clear sign.
2. Overheating: If your engine is overheating, it could indicate a problem with the water pump.
3. Whining Noise: A high-pitched whining noise from the front of the engine could mean the water pump bearing is worn out.
4. Corrosion or Build-Up: Visible rust or build-up on the water pump.

Preventative Measures

To avoid such issues, it’s essential to follow a regular maintenance schedule. At Wayside Garage, we recommend having your vehicle inspected every six months or every 5,000 miles. Our complimentary inspections, as part of our maintenance plan, help identify potential problems before they become major repairs.
